Our group currently at Erta Ale volcano during our ongoing expedition to Ethiopia’s Danakil depression undertook an exploration to approach the crater of Hayli Gubbi volcano, which had suddenly erupted two days earlier, in what was the first known and documented historic eruption of the volcano.
The group observed intense steaming and degassing, but no other activity. However, the fumes made it impossible to get closer than a few hundred meters. The ground in the vicinity of the crater which had been the vent of the explosive eruption is covered with a thick layer of fresh ash. If more details become available we will post them here.
