A new eruption has started early this morning on the Reykjanes peninsula.
Following an intense earthquake swarm indicating the final push of magma towards the surface from shortly after midnight, an eruptive fissure opened southeast of Litla-Skógfell at 3.54 am local time.

The eruption fissure extended slightly to the north at the beginning, reaching about 700 m length, and then has remained stable in the following two hours. The lava fountains along the fissure (known as curtain of fire) have quickly produced a lava field that reached about 1 square kilometer in surface area within the first hour.

The location is in a similar area as the previous fissure eruptions in 2023-24. It marks the 9th eruption in the series of fissure eruptions from the Svartsengi volcanic system north of Gríndavik on the Reykjanes peninsula since Dec 2023.
