A major explosive eruption occurred at the volcano a few hours ago. A massive vulcanian or sub-plinian explosion triggered a tall ash column rising to estimated 53,000 ft (17 km) altitude according to the Darwin Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC).
Pyroclastic flows traveled down on the flanks of the volcano, likely because of partial collapse of the eruption column.
