Taal (Luzon, Philippines): Following several phreatic-based eruptions, i.e. steam-driven only, over the past several months, a new phreatomagmatic explosion took place from the Taal main crater early this morning.
At about 05:58 local time, the eruption triggered a dark 600 meters-tall ash plume (2,800 meters altitude) that drifted west-southwest. Phreatomagmatic activity occurs when the presence of water is likely to cause significant explosive interaction between water and magma in the underwater crater.
