Phreatic eruption at the Dempo volcano today (image: PVMBG)
A phreatic explosion occurred this afternoon inside the summit crater of the volcano.
At 13:38 local time, dense jets of light-to-dark-gray ash and rocks, mixed with white steam, were ejected in a sudden, violent blast from the crater. The ash plume rose 200 meters above the summit and drifted north.
The local volcano observatory reported a seismic signal with a maximum amplitude of 30 mm and a duration of 240 seconds.
