The explosive eruption at the volcano continues.

A spectacular vulcanian-sized explosion occurred at 01:21 local time tonight, showering the Aira summit caldera with glowing lava bombs.

The explosion sent lava bombs onto the caldera flanks, turning into small glowing avalanches. Abundant grey-to-black ash emissions rose to about 7,000 ft (2,100 m) elevation.

The warning bulletin states that ballistic impacts of volcanic bombs and pyroclastic flows could affect an area of about 2 km distance from the main crater.
