Kilauea volcano (Hawai’i): first eruption in 2024 commenced

A new eruption started at the volcano shortly after midnight.

At about 12:30 AM local time, magma propagated across the rift zone area, located about 1-2 km south south of Kilauea’s caldera and north of the Koa’e fault system and Hilina Pali Road.
An orange-glowing steam rising from the eruption site suggests a continued rise of a new batch of magma onto the surface.
Therefore, the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory raised the alert level for the volcano to Red.
