Following the elevated seismic activity, a new lava dome began to grow on 26 April, as reported by the KVERT.
Visual and satellite observations confirmed a new dome growth located on the southwestern flank of the volcano. This phenomenon is visible in the attached SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) visualization from the Sentinel-1.
According to the satellite image, the lava dome appears smooth with a curved outer surface, resembling previous lava domes at the volcano. Viscous, gas-poor magma has been accumulating within the dome.
The extrusive eruption has been accompanied by the powerful gas-steam eruption on 30 April, generating the two-km gas-and-steam-laden eruption plume above the Karan dome.
Volcanologists have dubbed the new lava dome „Karan-1“.
