Reykjanes volcano update: lava barriers construction scheduled

Depth and magnitude of quakes versus time plot on the Reykjanes Peninsula

A long-expected idea to build artificial lava barriers in order to armour an area around the Svartsengi Power Plant and the Blue Lagoon became real.
Barricades are supposed to protect the important infrastructure on the Reykjanes peninsula in case of an eruption. The construction is scheduled in the upcoming days or weeks. This step was approved by Iceland’s Parliament last night.

Lava blockades will be up to 6-8 meters high and are expected to be finished within 30-40 days. Gravel and soil will be used and mined from nearby Stapafell mountain. Protecting the Svartsengi Power Plant is critical as it provides water and electricity to the entire Suðurnes region.
