Fukutoku-Okanoba volcano (Volcano Islands, Japan): new explosive activity, pumice raft spread to NW

A new explosive eruption started at the volcano on 13 August.

On 15 August, the Japan Coast Guard carried out a flight research and confirmed the ongoing activity.
Floating pumice from the eruption extended about 60 km to the NW.

The alert level for the volcano was raised to „Volcanic Warning, Sea Area” based on a two-level scale for submarine volcanoes.“

Fukutoku-Okanoba is a submarine horseshoe-shaped volcano about 1 km in diameter, located 5 km NE of the small pyramidal island Minami-iwo-jima in the Japanese Volcano Island chain.
