White Island volcano (New Zealand): minor steam and gas emissions continue

Active fumarolic vents emit at White Island volcanoe, 18 July (image: GNS)

The most recent observation flights confirmed the gas and steam leaking from the same vents as usual, with a similar discharge rate at low levels.
About a gas temperature, a half-dropped temperature decline has been registered. In March, values were higher than 240 °C, whilst the latest investigation detected only 120 °C. No ash emissions nor eruptive activity has been observed from vents.

Following two last on-site monitoring networks failure, the only way on how to make observations on the island, are through gas measurement flights.

Ground deformation data are being gathered via satellite-based measurements every 10 days. These are complemented by daily SO2 emissions data. Neither of these satellite techniques have detected significant changes in the overall activity at the volcano over the past few months.

Both alert levels, the Aviation Color Code and the Volcanic Alert Level remain at Yellow and Level 2.
