Villarrica volcano (Central Chile): new eruptive phase continues

The explosive activity at Villarrica volcano yesterday (image: POVI)

The volcano entered the eruptive stage over the past several hours.

A series of continuing pulses of abundant emissions of gas, water and some amounts of ash occurred yesterday afternoon. Ash emissions drifted east, where they deposited on the upper flank area. This might be an indicator of a new series of paroxysms (lava-fountaining episodes) in the coming days, which is nothing unusual on the volcano taking place in certain stages.
