On 4 May, local volcanologists carried out a flight observation to investigate the current volcano’s activity and its lava dome area.

Visibility during the flight was very limited due to low-level clouds, which made the active lava dome and pyroclastic flow deposits impossible to observe in detail. Despite weather conditions, three strong steam-laden plumes (so-called fumaroles) were detected on the western slope that appeared to be active even after 19 days after the massive eruption.

Taken photos show how the eruption affected the nearby area, including lakes, rivers and forests by covering them with thick ash layers. This explains the brown-to-reddish brown color of water bodies, described as „earthy“.
