Near-constant ash and steam emissions from the volcano this morning (image: VMGD)
The Vanuatu Meteorology and Geohazards Department’s (VMGD) surveillance cameras observed a continuous eruption plume at about 07:30 local time this morning.
Emissions of steam and ash, representing ‚venting‘ activity, rose approx. 2,300 ft (700 m) above the summit and drifted towards the east-southeast of the island.
Releasing sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions may be harmful to human health by causing respiratory problems.
People are warned to stay away from 2-km radius around the active vents in Lake Voui, and away from drainages during heavy rains.
