The activity on the Northeast Rift Zone continues at reduced levels of the lava output since this morning.
At about 11:30 AM local time today, the height of lava fountains at Fissure 3 decreased significantly, simultaneously with the lava flow discharge rate. The eruptive fissure is feeding lava that extends only 1.65 mi (2.65 km) from the vent in the northeast direction. Lava channels below this spot appear to be out of lava and likely seem to no longer feed the main flow.
The main lava flow, still remains stalled about 1.7 mi (2.8 km) distance from the Daniel K. Inouye Highway (Saddle Road), continues to be more or less inactive with a very slow rate of 7 feet (2 m) per hour.
The explanation for the reduced lava flows is not clear yet; it is common for effusive eruptions that either increase or decrease significantly. High discharge rate values may return anytime, the HVO continues to monitor this activity closely.
Sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions reduced considerably as well, from 130,000 to 30,000 tonnes/day.
