The hornito within the southern pit crater and emitting glowing gas and water vapor emissions (image: Enku Mulugeta/VolcanoDiscovery Ethiopia)
Our expedition leader and local guide from VolcanoDiscovery Ethiopia, Enku Mulugeta, visited the volcano in late December to make new observations.
The steep-sided hornito within the southern pit crater continues to build itself protruding from the crater floor. Vigorous lava spattering continues to eject juvenile, fresh and plastic lava clots that have already piled into 10 meters high deposits. This activity is accompanied by a constant glowing steam.
