Tsurumi volcano (Kyushu Island, Japan): volcanic-seismic unrest, alert status raised to Yellow

The activity at the Garandake lava dome has been increasing since the late last week.

On 8 July at 02:47 local time, the number of earthquakes sharply rose up to 92 events at shallow levels between 1-to-4 km located east of the dome and is still continuing at high frequencies.

Therefore, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) raised the alert level for the volcano to „yellow“.

The warning bulletin states that ballistic impacts of volcanic bombs and pyroclastic flows and tsunamis could affect an area of about 1 km distance from the main crater.

Tsurumi (or Yufu-Tsurumi) volcano is a group of lava domes including two large lava domes Tsurumidake and Yufudake and a smaller one Garandake lava dome.
