Chikurachki (Paramushir Island): A series of new explosive eruptions began at the volcano yesterday, the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team (KVERT) and the Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) in Tokyo reported.
Explosions sent ash plumes to 5500 m altitude that drifted towards the northeast. KVERT increased the alert status of the volcano from „yellow“ to „orange“ and warns that larger eruptions could occur any time. The area near the volcano is uninhabited which is why the eruption poses little to no risk to people on ground.
Chikurachki is one of several active stratovolcanoes on Paramushir, the northernmost and largest of the central and northern Kuriles, and the only one with a larger permanent settlement, the town of Severo-Kurilsk.
