Taupo volcano (New Zealand): seismic swarm

A swarm of small earthquakes has occurred beneath Taupo lake since 28 April.
The GeoNet volcano observatory reported that 84 quakes have been registered of which two have been located with magnitude more than M 3. Earthquakes in the area occur at shallow levels of about 15 km and the recent events don’t differ as were detected in the range of 3 to 16 km depth.

Locations of quakes were distributed mostly in a NE-SW pattern along the east shore and in the center of the lake, but also around the Wairakei geothermal system, which may suggest that a fault zone has been activated in this area.

Earthquake swarms are common in the Taupō Volcanic Zone (TVZ), and several are recorded each year. Larger ones have lasted weeks-to-months and can include many hundreds of earthquakes.
