The Indonesian Centre of Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) lowered the alert status from Level 3 to Level 2 valid on 11 May at 21:00 local time.
The volcano is currently calm since 1 January and its activity has been mostly characterized by passive emissions of steam and gas venting about 50-500 meters above the summit crater. The average rate of sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions was measured at about 250 tonnes/day with a maximum value of 4000 tonnes/day in January.
The seismic activity of the volcano has decreased over the past four months in general.
GPS, EDM and tilt monitoring instruments detected a continuous ground deflation (subsidence) of the edifice during the period.
The active lava dome within the southeastern crater continues to grow at very low rate. Rising of fresh viscous magma into it causes volcanic earthquakes at low intensity.
The current hazards are hot avalanches from the lava dome to tumble down the slopes which may turn develop into very dangerous hot glowing currents (pyroclastic flows). People are advised to avoid the area of 3 km radius from the summit and 4.5 km distance from the SE sector of the edifice.
The last eruption at the volcano occurred on 28 July 2021.
