Phreatic eruption at Turrialba volcano today (image: OVSICORI-UNA)
A small and short-lived (0.5 min) phreatic eruption occurred at the volcano at 12:59 local time today.
An ash plume rose several 100 m above the summit and extended to the SW of the volcano.
Phreatic events result in steam-rich blasts of old rock without any new magma erupting.
