White Island (New Zealand): (18 Jan) Scientists from the GeoNet volcano observatory did their regular flight over the volcano to measure gas emissions and the active vent temperature last week.
The maximum vent temperature was measured at about 191 °C, which was a decline from 516 °C detected in December last year. Temperatures over 500 °C were being observed in July and August 2021.

Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai (Tonga, Tonga Islands): (18 Jan) A few hours after the eruption, Tonga’s internet and phone lines were disrupted as the main undersea cable, linking Tonga and Fiji with the rest of the world, seems to have been cut which make 105 000 Tonga residents almost unreachable.
„It could take up to two weeks to get it repaired. The nearest cable-laying vessel is in Port Moresby,“ the Southern Cross Cable Network’s networks director Dean Veverka told the AFP news agency.
According to AFP, the Southern Cross is helping out Tonga Cable Limited, owning 872-km cable.

First after-eruption satellite images of several ash-impacted Tongan populated towns and villages were published by UNOSAT and MAXAR satellites.
So far, 41 buildings have fallen victim to the tsunami and 63 were found covered by ash in Nomuka village caused by the latest violent eruption.
Ash-and-tsunami affected populated areas detected by the satellite were also recorded in Nukuʻalofa, the capital of Tonga, Fafaa village and Pangai town.

A satellite image from 16 January identified that the lava flow, being active from two eruptive fissures, branched off into two lava arms traveling east. The larger (northern) lava tongue didn’t make it to the sea yet, 2 kilometers have been leaving to the ocean entry.
