SINAPRED reported that a series of five moderate-to-strong vulcanian-type explosions occurred at the volcano between 13:06 and 13:32 local time yesterday.
The strongest eruption at 01:25 local time triggered a dense, dark ash column to an estimated altitude of 8,000 ft (2,400 m) which extended about 17 km to the southwest of the volcano. Ashfall was reported in cities of El Viejo, Chinandega and Chichigalapa.
Expected explosions in the near future will not threaten inhabited areas, but volcanological observatory recommends to keep general precautions.
