The volcano remains active, emitting near-continuous ash and steam plumes that rise a few 100 meters up to approx. 1.5-1.8 km (5-6,000 ft) altitude. A 1 km exclusion zone around the active Nakadake crater remains in place and the cable car to its rim, otherwise a popular tourist destination, is not operating.
