Dukono blasts to 10 km as Santa Maria sends pyroclastic flows; alerts steady

A towering ash column at Indonesia’s Dukono and short-run pyroclastic flows from Guatemala’s Santa Maria stood out today. Japan’s Sakurajima intensified with bombs thrown more than a kilometer from the crater, while Mayon in the Philippines kept lava flowing on multiple flanks. Compared to yesterday, ash emissions were newly reported at Dukono and Santa Maria; most other alert levels and activity states were unchanged.

United States
Lava continued to slowly emerge at Great Sitkin (Watch / Aviation ORANGE), with rockfalls from the growing summit dome. At Kilauea (Advisory / Aviation YELLOW), eruptive activity stayed paused but vents showed persistent glow and small areas of incandescence. Shishaldin (Advisory / Aviation YELLOW) produced vapor and SO2 emissions alongside a thermal anomaly.

Indonesia
Dukono produced a ~16-minute eruption with an ash column rising about 10 km above the crater and drifting north, amid harmonic tremor and audible booms. Frequent bursts persisted at Ibu, with 123 explosions and ash-and-gas to 600 m, while Semeru sent 68 ash plumes up to 1.2 km. On Java, Merapi generated hot rockfalls traveling up to 1.8 km; several others—including Lewotolok, Lewotobi, Marapi, and Raung—showed low plumes or minor explosions with alerts mostly at Level 2–3.

Japan
Sakurajima intensified: one explosion lofted a plume to 3.5 km and ejected large bombs 1–1.3 km from Minamidake; Alert Level 3 remained in effect.

Philippines
Lava effusion continued at Mayon (Alert Level 3), with flows 3.8 km east, 3.2 km southeast, and 1.6 km south, plus minor Strombolian bursts and frequent rockfalls. Taal produced a brief 6-minute phreatic burst and shows inflationary deformation (Alert Level 1). Kanlaon emitted gas plumes to 200 m with elevated SO2 (~2,062 t/d) and ongoing seismicity (Alert Level 2). Unrest persisted at Bulusan with 57 volcanic earthquakes recorded (Alert Level 1).

Mexico
At Popocatepetl (Yellow Alert – Phase 2), 107 exhalations and about 45 minutes of tremor accompanied ash, gas, and steam emissions.

South America
In Ecuador, Reventador (81 explosions) sent ash up to 1.6 km with incandescent rockfalls down 1 km, while Sangay logged 291 explosions and ash to 1.5 km. Peru’s Sabancaya produced ash-and-gas plumes to 1.1 km along with several internal earthquakes and thermal anomalies.

Other
In Kamchatka, Sheveluch showed lava-dome growth and lava flows with gas plumes (Aviation ORANGE), while Bezymianny and Krasheninnikov displayed effusive activity and thermal anomalies (Aviation YELLOW). In Guatemala, Fuego produced explosions with ashfall in multiple communities, and Santa Maria generated avalanches and short-run pyroclastic flows from the Caliente Dome; nearby Pacaya released gas-and-vapor plumes.
