Etna volcano update: Continuing lava flow, spectacular imagery of last evening at Etna

Violent strombolian activity during last night's paroxysm at the Voragine (image: Catania Fotoreporter / facebook)

The effusive activity (lava flow emission), which began yesterday at 20:49 local time in the upper Valle del Leone area from a new vent at an altitude of approximately 2,700 m above sea level, continues after the end of last night’s second paroxysm from the Voragine crater.

According to the volcano observatory, it had reached an estimated altitude of around 1,700-1,750 m above sea level in the area above Rocca Capra by around 10 am this morning.
The flow is currently advancing only slowly.

Yesterday, July 30, intense strombolian activity from the Voragine crater—which had gradually decreased until temporarily ceasing around 13:00 local time, restarted around 18:50 and gradually regained strength, reaching a very sustained level around 21:55. The activity continued with sustained fountaining until approximately 01:40 am this morning, then abruptly ceased around 02:00 am. Ash plumes rose to approximately 7,000 m above sea level and spread in a southwesterly direction.

Spectacular images of the eruption can be found widely on social media, for example:
