White Island volcano (New Zealand): alert level lowered to 2
Since April 17, the volcano had been experiencing the minor eruption, primarily indicated by satellite detections of ash. However, recent observations from GeoNet cameras in the Bay of Plenty, satellite imagery over the past four weeks, and a monitoring flight today have confirmed that the eruption has ceased, with no signs of ash emissions from the volcano.
Footage from our Whakatāne and Te Kaha cameras, along with today’s monitoring flight, show a decline in the activity at the active vent area. There have been no signs of eruptive behavior or ash emissions during the past four weeks. Additionally, MetService has not identified any ash in the plume using satellite data during this time.
Based on a thorough assessment of volcanic activity, the Volcanic Alert Level lowered to 2 and the Aviation Colour Code to Yellow.
