Mayon lava flows persist; Semeru and Lewotolok record frequent explosions

Indonesia led today’s activity with frequent explosions at multiple centers, while the Philippines‘ Mayon sustained long lava flows. Peru’s Sabancaya lofted ash up to 1.5 km, and steady unrest continued in Costa Rica as Mexico’s Popocatepetl stayed at Yellow Alert – Phase 2.

Indonesia
At Semeru, 56 explosions sent ash up to 1 km with a pyroclastic-density-current signal and nine rockfalls. Lewotolok and Ibu logged more than 100 explosions each, with ash rising as high as 800 m. Merapi produced 15 hot rockfalls reaching up to 2 km and modest gas plumes; lower-level blasts were also noted at Lewotobi and Dukono. Minor gas emissions were observed at Krakatau, while several others in the arc remained in states of unrest.

Philippines
Mayon kept effusing lava, with flows extending about 3.8 km to the E, 3.2 km to the SE, and 1.8 km to the S. Activity included 258 rockfalls, SO2 averaging 1,313 t/d, weak plumes to 200 m, crater glow, and short-term deformation changes. Elsewhere, Kanlaon continued erupting at Alert Level 2, while Taal and Bulusan were at Alert Level 1.

Mexico
Popocatepetl activity persisted under Yellow Alert – Phase 2.

Central America
In Costa Rica, Poas remained at Level 2 – Warning, with ongoing low-level eruptive activity. Unrest continued at Rincon de la Vieja and Turrialba, also at Level 2 – Warning.

South America
In Peru, Sabancaya sent ash-and-gas plumes up to 1.5 km above the summit, with a few internal earthquakes and repeated thermal anomalies. In Ecuador, Reventador and Sangay continued erupting under Orange and Yellow alerts, respectively.
