Giant ‘Monkey’ to Demand Primate Lab’s Closure at Apple Cup

Spectators arriving for the University of Washington (UW) Apple Cup and President’s Pregame Reception on Saturday will be greeted by Northwest Animal Rights Network (NARN) and PETA supporters, along with a giant “monkey,” who will call for the closure of the school’s Washington National Primate Research Center (WaNPRC). At the same time, a disturbing mobile video message featuring sports reporter and influencer Emily Austin will circle the campus and Husky Stadium to expose the horrors inside the WaNPRC.  And this ad telling UW to “stop the monkey business” will run in The Daily’s Game Daily newspaper, which will be handed out during Saturday’s game.

When:      Saturday, November 25, 11:30 a.m.

Where:    Outside University of Washington Station in front of Husky Stadium, 3800 Montlake Blvd. N.E., Seattle (Please see the Google Maps link here.)

The federally funded laboratory—where experimenters cut into endangered monkeys’ skulls and infect them with deadly pathogens—is notorious for allowing animals to die from strangulation, dehydration, starvation, choking on their own vomit, and mauling. Last year, UW was forced to pay more than $540,000 in fees, penalties, and interest for trying to keep public records about the disasters inside the WaNPRC’s walls hidden.

“UW fans should know that their tax dollars are paying for the torment and abuse of monkeys in the University of Washington’s primate laboratories,” says NARN Board President Rachel Bjork. “PETA and NARN are calling on UW to close the primate center and switch to superior, animal-free research methods that are relevant to human health.”

‘Dead Ducks’ to Hang Outside H&M in Push for Feather-Free Friday

On the busiest shopping day of the year, passersby will be met with a disturbing sight outside a local H&M store: fake dead ducks hung by their feet on a clothing rack, alongside a flock of PETA supporters who will call out the company’s use of cruelly produced down and urge people to shop only for feather-free products.

When:      Friday, November 24, 12 noon

Where:    In front of H&M, 100 Newbury St., Boston

A PETA Asia investigation into Vietnamese duck farms and slaughterhouses—which provide so-called “responsible” down to suppliers, including one that listed H&M as a customer—shows ducks suffering from gaping and bloody wounds inside dirty sheds and on lots strewn with feces and being stabbed in the neck while still conscious. Many of the birds continued to move for more than a minute after workers cut their necks and cut off their feet. As a result, H&M has removed the “responsible” down label from its online offerings in the U.S.—indicating that it knows that the designation is a sham—but it continues to sell down.

PETA has released nine exposés of the down industry, each proving that filth, suffering, and violent deaths are industry norms.

“Every down item is stuffed with the pain and suffering of terrified birds who died in agony,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is calling on H&M to help end this cruelty by banning down and is urging holiday shoppers to extend peace on Earth to all animals by sticking to feather-free, vegan materials.”

Big ‘Birds’ to Land Outside H&M in Push for Feather-Free Friday

On Friday, the busiest shopping day of the year, a flock of PETA supporters dressed as giant ducks and geese will swoop down on the H&M store on Lincoln Road to call out the company’s use of cruelly produced down and urge passersby to shop only for feather-free items.

When:      Friday, November 24, 12 noon

Where:    Outside H&M, 551 Lincoln Rd., Miami Beach
