PETA’s ‘Grim Reapers’ in Fargo to Launch Vegan Appeal in Top COVID-19–Afflicted State

Because North Dakota is the top state for COVID-19 cases per 100,000 people, two “grim reapers”—complete with scythes proclaiming, “Slaughterhouses Kill Animals and Workers”—will lead PETA supporters in a spirited protest in downtown Fargo on Saturday. They’ll point out that the novel coronavirus originated in a meat market, that the virus has spread like wildfire among slaughterhouse workers, and that the solution to all this suffering and death of humans and other animals is simple: Go vegan.

“Filthy, wet, blood- and offal-soaked slaughterhouses are breeding grounds for deadly diseases that jump from animals to humans—they’re the least safe workplaces in the world, even when there’s not a pandemic raging,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “Having workers stand shoulder to shoulder in a slaughterhouse endangers everyone.”

PETA notes that confining and killing animals for food has been linked to SARS, swine flu, and bird flu in addition to COVID-19—and a new strain of swine flu with “pandemic potential” is now spreading from pigs to humans in China. The meat industry has allowed slaughterhouse workers to face a nearly unchecked spread of the novel coronavirus. Recently, PETA purchased stock in major U.S. and Canadian slaughter companies to urge them to produce and pack exclusively vegan meats.

UCLA Students to Protest Urban Outfitters Over Cruelty

On Black Friday—the busiest shopping day of the year—members of the UCLA hub of the PETA-backed group Students Opposing Speciesism (SOS) will gather at an Urban Outfitters store as part of PETA’s international campaign demanding that the company stop selling leather, alpaca fleece, wool, mohair, and anything else obtained from animals. The protesters will hold signs showing the terrified faces of exploited animals and reading, “The Face of Fashion Is Fear.”

“Behind every wool sweater or leather purse on Urban Outfitters’ shelves was a gentle animal who felt pain and fear and didn’t want to suffer for fashion,” says PETA Director of Students Opposing Speciesism Program Rachelle Owen. “PETA is calling on the retailer to stop selling materials stolen from animals and stock only stylish vegan designs like those it already offers.”

PETA launched its campaign against Urban Outfitters, Inc., brands—which also include Anthropologie and Free People—after Anthropologie was implicated in a first-of-its-kind PETA investigation revealing that workers mutilated alpacas during shearing. Other videos have revealed that workers hit, kick, and mutilate gentle sheep for their wool; leave sensitive goats with bloody, gaping wounds at mohair and cashmere operations; burn, electroshock, beat, and slaughter cows for leather; yank out the feathers of ducks and geese by the fistful for down; and boil silkworms alive to produce silk.

SOS is a youth-led revolt against speciesism—the old belief that, despite their unique talents and abilities, other animals are inferior to humans and it’s acceptable to exploit them.

Anthropologie to Be ‘Closed for Cruelty’ by PETA in Birmingham

On Black Friday—the busiest shopping day of the year—a “cow,” an “alpaca,” a “sheep,” and a “goat” will lead PETA supporters as they descend on an Anthropologie store and block the entrance. The action is part of the group’s new international campaign demanding that all Urban Outfitters, Inc., brands—which include Anthropologie, Free People, and Urban Outfitters—stop selling leather, alpaca fleece, wool, mohair, and anything else cruelly and violently obtained from animals. The protesters will hold signs showing the terrified faces of exploited animals and reading, “The Face of Fashion Is Fear.”

“Behind every alpaca fleece sweater or leather purse on Anthropologie’s shelves was a gentle animal who felt pain and fear and didn’t want to suffer for fashion,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “PETA is calling on the retailer to stop selling materials stolen from animals and stock only stylish vegan designs like those it already offers.”

PETA’s ‘Pandemic Pig’ to Protest Triumph Foods Slaughterhouse in St. Joseph

On Friday, PETA’s “Pandemic Pig” will lead activists in a spirited protest of the Triumph Foods pig slaughterhouse on the Stockyards Expressway, which has remained open even as hundreds of workers have contracted COVID-19 and four have died. The protesters will point out that the novel coronavirus originated in a meat market, that the virus has spread like wildfire among slaughterhouse workers, and that Triumph Foods can help stop this suffering and death of humans and other animals by either shutting down or producing exclusively vegan pork.

“Filthy, wet, blood- and offal-soaked slaughterhouses and meat markets are breeding grounds for zoonotic diseases that threaten the health of every human on the planet,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “PETA is urging Triumph Foods to see the vegan light and reinvent itself as a producer of healthy, 100% humane, plant-based pork.”

The novel coronavirus originated in a Chinese “wet market” where live and dead animals were sold for human consumption, swine flu began on a U.S. factory farm, and other influenza viruses have been traced to chickens. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns that approximately 75% of recently emerged infectious diseases affecting humans originated in other animals.
