Urgent From PETA: Wildfire Survival Tips for Animals in Montana

Because the Boulder 2700 Fire is threatening Finley Point, Yellow Bay, and the surrounding areas and evacuations have been ordered, animals must be kept indoors and will die if abandoned.

Residents in areas affected by smoke and falling ash should keep animals indoors and avoid all outdoor activities, such as running with dogs. If visibility is less than 5 miles, smoke has compromised the air quality and reached unsafe levels. Anyone who sees animals in distress and is unable to help should note their locations and alert authorities immediately.

Trapped horses and other animals can’t outrun wildfires. They should never be locked in their stalls or confined in any way so that they’re unable to flee.

PETA has issued a  wildfire-preparedness public service announcement featuring Dean Winters. It will remind everyone to make plans to ensure the safety of animal companions in advance of trouble in order to avoid being caught unprepared. PETA also offers a video about keeping animal companions safe during fires for you to share. For more information, visit PETA.org or follow the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.

Joaquin Phoenix, a True ‘Brother Bear,’ Sticks Up for Bears in Traveling Show

“I just learned that two of the bears used in your traveling show, Bambi and Bruno, served as models for Disney’s Brother Bear.”

👆 That was Joaquin Phoenix’s opening line in a letter he sent to Bearadise Ranch operator Monica Welde. After learning from PETA that the two bears who were used as models for the Disney film (which Joaquin starred in) are living at the Florida roadside zoo and being forced to perform in a traveling show, the longtime PETA supporter appealed to Welde, hoping that she’d consider bears’ perspective, much as audiences saw his Brother Bear character do.

“I voiced the movie’s main character, Kenai, who, as a lesson in empathy, is magically transformed to be able to see the world through bears’ eyes, and now I’m asking you to see through their eyes, too,” Joaquin wrote. “These bears deserve better than a life on the road, where they are robbed of everything that’s natural and important to them, and if you put yourself in their place, I’m sure you’d see that, too.”

While on the road, Bearadise Ranch operators keep the bears inside cramped transport cages in which they can barely turn around, let alone avoid their own waste. During performances, the bears climb ladders, carry a basketball while walking on their hind legs, pull hoops over their heads, and perform other tricks—likely because they fear what will be done to them if they don’t. Florida wildlife officials recently issued Bearadise Ranch’s owner a misdemeanor citation after she forced a bear to perform as a “ring bearer” during a wedding ceremony and ushered a news crew into the bear’s enclosure.

In addition to urging Welde to end the traveling shows, in his letter, Joaquin offers to help arrange for the bears to be moved to an accredited sanctuary, where they’d never be exploited for entertainment again. “Will you please consider putting an end to the tricks and the travel and give all the bears at your facility the chance just to live like bears?” he asks Welde.

Join Joaquin and PETA in helping bears exploited for and forced to perform in the Bears of Bearadise Ranch’s traveling show!

While Joaquin appeals to the show’s operators, you can remind event organizers—including those of the Mississippi Valley Fair, where the Bearadise Ranch bear act is slated to appear this week—that this archaic form of entertainment should be relegated to the history books. Urgent: PETA Warns That Dogs May Die in Heat Wave in North Carolina—Vital Tips Here

This week’s scorching temperatures—expected to reach the upper 90s in Raleigh, Jacksonville, Wilmington and Morehead City —will put dogs at high risk of enduring heat prostration and dying, so PETA is issuing an urgent warning to anyone with a dog. Please be sure to do the following:

  • Touch the pavement before walks to ensure that it won’t burn dogs’ foot pads.
  • Be alert to a long, curled-up tongue and heavy panting, as dogs cannot sweat as humans can and heat builds up inside their bodies.
  • Walk only in the shade or on earth or grass, and never leave animals outdoors in extreme heat or inside vehicles.

In May, PETA fieldworkers discovered the body of a dog who had died after being left chained up in the hot sun, and similar reports nationwide are starting to roll in. Recently, a law-enforcement officer mistakenly left his patrol car with a dog inside it, and the K-9 succumbed to heat prostration and died. Already this year, 23 dogs have been reported dead from heat-related causes. (Figures are far likely higher, as most heat-related companion animal deaths go unreported.)

Anyone who leaves animals outside to suffer in severe weather may be prosecuted for cruelty.
