PETA Mobile Video Billboard Showing Monkeys in UW Labs to Troll School Officials’ Neighborhoods

Tomorrow, University of Washington (UW) officials President Ana Mari Cauce and School of Pharmacy Dean Sean Sullivan will wake up to a PETA mobile video billboard rolling through their neighborhoods, urging them to close the infamous Washington National Primate Research Center (WaNPRC). The action is the latest step in PETA’s campaign exposing cruelty and violations at the federally funded facility, which tears infant monkeys away from their mothers and experiments on them.

The video compilation includes footage showing the monkeys at WaNPRC inside kitchen cabinet–size cages, which are their only homes, and the devastating effects of long-term confinement and social isolation.

It also features John Gluck, Ph.D., a former primate experimenter who trained in the laboratory of the controversial Harry Harlow at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and who now condemns such experiments.

“UW’s primate laboratory has stolen thousands of monkeys’ lives and left babies scarred, without producing any significant medical advances,” says PETA Senior Vice President Kathy Guillermo. “PETA’s billboard reflects growing opposition to the primate center’s nearly six-decade reign of terror and the urgent need for it to shut down forever.”

Monkeys at the WaNPRC have died from strangulation, starvation, dehydration, veterinary error, and choking on their own vomit. The facility was recently cited for repeatedly allowing monkeys to escape and be injured. It has laid off multiple staff members, including ones responsible for taking care of the monkeys, and has had eight directors in 10 years. In an apparent conflict of interest, UW’s animal experimentation oversight committee includes the director of a pro–animal experimentation organization that receives significant contributions from UW.

Harvard University announced the shutdown of its New England National Primate Research Center in 2013 after looking critically at its multiple animal welfare violations, the difficulty of providing monkeys in laboratories with even a modicum of humane treatment, and the future of its research priorities—and PETA is calling on UW to do the same.

According to a 2018 Pew Research Center survey, a majority of Americans oppose all experiments on animals. Studies show that 90% of basic research, most of which involves animals, fails to lead to treatments for humans.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to experiment on”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.

In a ‘Pinch’ for Dinner? Try These Vegan Crab Recipes

Old Bay Seasoning has a loyal following, especially on the East Coast, where many sprinkle it on everything. But you don’t have to harm crabs in order to enjoy the flavor of this savory spice mix—it’s “accidentally vegan” and tastes great on a variety of animal-friendly foods, from French fries and popcorn to chicken-less nuggets and fish-free fillets. Each year, millions of crabs are stolen from their homes in the ocean to be dismembered and boiled alive. But with ingredients like hearts of palm, artichokes, and jackfruit, there’s no reason to eat crabs. We’ve found some of the best vegan crab recipes, many of which use Old Bay or seaweed for a crab-friendly taste of sea.

Say no to serving up cruelty by trying these recipes:

Cheesy Vegan ‘Crab’ Dip

This dip comes from Maryland-born Caitlin Shoemaker, so it’s sure to be authentic. Shredded trumpet mushrooms, dulse granules, and Old Bay make it one that you’ll want to serve at every party.

Crabless Vegan Stuffed Mushrooms

With their seaweed and hearts of palm filling, these stuffed mushrooms will be a hit at any gathering.

‘Seafood’ Stuffed Bell Peppers

To elevate your crabless cakes from an appetizer to a full-fledged meal, try stuffing them in bell peppers. The crab cakes used for this recipe are made from lion’s mane mushrooms.

Thai-Style Coconut + Crabless Soup

Kelp granules give the jackfruit in this recipe its salty ocean flavor, which pairs perfectly with the lemongrass, curry paste, and ginger.

Vegan Cajun Seafood Boil

No animals had to die to make this delicious Cajun seafood boil, seasoned with plenty of Old Bay.

Vegan Chesapeake Chowder

A type of seaweed called kombu is used to make the “dashi” stock for the base of this chowder.

Vegan Crab Cakes With Horseradish Dill Tartar Sauce

There are endless recipes for vegan crab cakes out there, but this one is made with marinated artichokes and a crispy panko breading.

PETA to Hound Boston Millennium Hotel Over Iditarod Ties

Tomorrow, PETA supporters will descend on The Bostonian owned by Millennium Hotels and Resorts—with “dead dogs” and suitcases sporting a spoof “Millhellium” logo to decry the company’s sponsorship of the Iditarod dog race, in which more than 150 dogs have died.

When:    Thursday, August 5, 12 noon

Where:    The Bostonian, 26 North St., Boston

“This much-despised race forces dogs to cross nearly 1,000 miles of ice and wind in just two weeks, running some animals to their deaths,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is calling on Millennium Hotels and Resorts to check out of the Iditarod’s cruelty to dogs by ending this sponsorship.”

Baboons Endure Frostbite, Amputations at Texas Biomed; PETA Calls For Federal Probe

After uncovering federal reports documenting that the fingers, toes, or tails of 159 baboons had to be amputated because the Southwest National Primate Research Center at Texas Biomedical Research Institute failed to protect them during February’s winter storm, PETA is demanding that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) investigate. The federal Animal Welfare Act requires laboratories to provide adequate shelter that protects animals from weather extremes—yet records show that an estimated 15% of Texas Biomed’s baboon colony sustained frostbite, resulting in amputations.

As highly tactile primates, “one of the few pleasures for those of them confined at [Texas Biomed] is exercising their ability to pluck blades of grass, manipulate food items, and engage in grooming,” PETA writes in its letter to the USDA.

“Leaving baboons to freeze during a catastrophic, record-breaking storm constitutes neglect and cruelty,” says PETA Vice President Dr. Alka Chandna. “PETA urges federal agents to investigate and prosecute this federally funded disaster.”

In previous years, the USDA has fined Texas Biomed for repeatedly allowing primates to escape from their cages and injure themselves and others, including humans. In 2020, the facility confined more than 2,700 primates. Subjected to painful procedures and invasive surgeries, some of these monkeys are intentionally denied pain relief.

According to a 2018 Pew Research Center survey, a majority of Americans oppose all experiments on animals. Other surveys suggest that the shrinking group that does accept animal experimentation does so only because it believes it to be necessary for medical progress. However, studies show that a staggering 90% of basic research, most of which involves animals and the type of work carried out at Texas Biomed, fails to lead to treatments for humans.
