Update: Urge Highfill, Arkansas, to Protect Bald Eagles From Developers (Again)!

Last year, PETA was alerted to the proposed rezoning of land along W. Arkansas Highway 12 in Highfill, Arkansas, which is reportedly a well-established nesting area for bald eagles. After hearing from PETA supporters, town officials voted against issuing permits that would allow billion-dollar development company D.R. Horton to bulldoze and build on the land. Sadly, just months later, we’ve been told that new permits to develop the land are already being considered. The next council meeting is scheduled for February 13, and the next planning commission meeting is scheduled for February 27.

‘Bleating’ the Odds: How PETA-Supported Rescuers Saved Baby Goats in Ukraine

A PETA-supported team in Ukraine called Animal Rescue Kharkiv (ARK) rescued several baby goats (kids) recently, effecting an adorable “kindergarten.”

The war had taken everything from these goats but their lives—their home was blown to bits, and their elderly owner suddenly passed away. By the time the owner’s daughter called ARK for help, the mother goats were so starved that they had stopped producing milk and were unable to feed their kids.

Now, the whole family is living in a safe place near Kharkiv with a kind caretaker who gives the moms nutrient-rich food to help them gain weight and bottle-feeds the little ones.

Rescued in Ukraine: How PETA is Helping Animals Like the Baby Goats

Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, PETA Germany and its partners have been on the ground building a robust network of rescue workers, volunteers, and activists to help as many animals as they possibly can. You can support this work through PETA’s Global Compassion Fund.

PETA’s Global Compassion Fund is moving mountains for animals in Ukraine:

  • PETA-supported teams have rescued more than 15,000 animals—and counting!
  • Cats, dogs, horses, and other animals have received more than 1.5 million kilograms of food since the beginning of the war.
  • Beautiful safe spaces—like this cat refuge—are being maintained for around 1,300 animals in Kharkiv, where a PETA-supported clinic treats 100 to 130 seriously injured or sick animals every day.
  • The PETA-supported team at Animal Rescue Kharkiv has reunited 60% of all their rescued and recovered animals with their original families.

Will Animal-Themed Carousels Change With the Times?

Today, PETA sent a letter to Aaron Landrum, president and CEO of Chance Rides, the largest manufacturer of amusement rides in the country, asking that the company end the production and sale of animal-themed carousels that normalize the use of animals as conveyances and amusements and instead produce carousel figures in the shape of cars, airplanes, spaceships, bulldozers, and other vehicles or more whimsical designs, like shooting stars, rainbows, or brooms.

Animals used for rides and other forms of entertainment—including camels, horses, elephants, and dolphins—are often beaten into submission, deprived of everything that’s natural and important to them, and even slaughtered once their bodies wear out and that public opinion has turned against such acts of human domination over other species.

Children learn through play, and teaching them to have respect and compassion for all living, feeling beings can help create a more just and merciful world. PETA urges Chance Rides and all other carousel manufacturers to hit the brakes on old-fashioned animal-themed rides and embrace designs that engage children’s imagination and showcase human talent.

If Chance Rides makes the switch, it would join a growing list of compassionate companies—including Nabisco, Trader Joe’s, and Dukal Corporation—that have successfully updated their designs to reflect society’s changing perceptions of our relationships with others on the planet.

Shocking Bodycam Video Footage Shows Terrified Zebra Caught in Circus Trailer Fire

According to reports, a trailer hauling animals for the Mizpah Shrine Circus recently caught fire in Indiana, endangering lives and causing a hectic scene that was captured in shocking bodycam video footage. In the clip below, a group of men are seen trying to get a terrified zebra out of the burning vehicle, pulling on ropes fastened to the animal while swearing loudly.

The Shriners have been repeatedly warned that it’s already terrifying for these animals to be crammed into trailers, hauled hundreds of miles, and forced to perform tricks that baffle and distress them—but now, being trapped in a fire and likely inhaling toxic smoke have added to their trauma.

Nothing could be further from the quiet, vast plains and woodlands where zebras belong than a traveling circus. Colorful pageantry disguises the fact that animals used in acts are held captive and forced—under threat of punishment—to perform confusing, uncomfortable, repetitious, and often painful tricks.

In the past, runaway zebras have been gunned down, been hit by cars, fallen off cliffs, and sustained deadly injuries. Tigers have escaped and been shot dead.

PETA is calling on the Mizpah Shrine to have a heart, understand that times have changed, and follow the lead of Ringling Bros. and UniverSoul circuses by dropping animal acts altogether.

Tell Shriners International It’s Time for an Update: End Cruel Animal Circuses!

Shriners International claims to be dedicated to compassion and service to others, yet its chapters continue to host notoriously cruel animal circuses.

It’s as black-and-white as a zebra’s stripes: Hauling sensitive animals from town to town inside cramped cages and forcing them to perform tricks under the threat of punishment is a form of speciesism—a human-supremacist worldview—and it must end.

PETA Statement: Miami Seaquarium Must Close as Even More Violations Are Found!

A just-released U.S. Department of Agriculture report reveals that the Miami Seaquarium was cited following an October inspection for yet another slew of violations of the federal Animal Welfare Act, including such serious failures as not having the basic equipment needed to provide animals with necessary veterinary care and neglecting to schedule cataract surgery for a sea lion until her eye pain was so severe that she began refusing food. Other violations include dolphins found with dangerous foreign objects in their mouths and throats, including a 2-inch nail, a broken bolt, and small pieces of shell; a dolphin being kicked in the mouth during a customer interaction; a dolphin jumping the barrier between pools and joining another social group; and numerous dilapidated enclosures once again found to contain rust, mold, and bubbling paint.

Below, please find a statement from PETA President Ingrid Newkirk:

The Miami Seaquarium is a fiasco, a failure, a fraud, and a filthy dump for marine life to die in and must be closed down NOW. PETA is calling on officials to stop procrastinating and shut down this wretched hellhole immediately so that the animals imprisoned there can be sent to reputable facilities where they can finally get some relief.
