Growing Wildfire Season Sparks PETA’s Massive ‘Cow on Fire’ Message

Because the climate crisis is causing California’s wildfire season to last about 75 days longer than usual and officials are warning that the blazes will continue to burn through the end of the year, PETA is urging shoppers to cross one of the culprits—leather—off their lists through a sky-high message now up on the route to Riverpoint Marketplace.

Animal agriculture—which includes the leather industry, a major part of meat and dairy profit margins—is responsible for nearly one-fifth of all human-induced greenhouse-gas emissions. The World Bank reports that cattle ranching has caused over 80% of deforestation in the Amazon rainforest since 1970, and because of fires—many of which are deliberately set to clear land to raise cows and grow crops to feed them—along with hotter temperatures and droughts, parts of the Amazon are now emitting more carbon dioxide than they can absorb.

“Avoiding leather is an easy thing that we can all do to avert a climate catastrophe, but we’re running out of time,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is asking people to save cows’ and everyone else’s skin by choosing vegan bags, shoes, and furnishings.”

In addition to harming the planet past the point of no return, leather production is abysmally cruel to cows. A PETA video exposé of the world’s largest leather producer revealed that the gentle animals were branded on the face, electroshocked, and beaten before being violently killed.

PETA’s billboard is located on I-80, just north of the junction with U.S. 50, just a mile from Ross Dress for Less, Skechers, Walmart, and other leather-selling retailers at Riverpoint Marketplace.

How Sweet! Houston Bakery’s Vegan Pumpkin Cheesecake Pie Wins National PETA Award

Now that 47% of Americans want to incorporate more vegan foods into their meals, this Thanksgiving is poised to be the most vegan one yet. So to help holiday hosts plan their menus, PETA has compieled the Top 10 Vegan Pies served around the country, and Sinfull Bakery’s Pumpkin Cheesecake Pie has won a spot on the list.

“Made from scratch with a flaky organic crust, spiced pumpkin, and rich, creamy cheesecake, Sinfull Bakery’s vegan pie gives diners pumpkin to talk about,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “From peach to pecan, PETA celebrates all the vegan pies that make it easy to enjoy a delicious ThanksVegan feast that leaves cows and chickens in peace.”

Not only are vegan desserts free of saturated animal fat and cholesterol, they also spare animals immense suffering: In the dairy industry, calves are torn away from their mothers shortly after birth, and in the egg industry, parts of chickens’ beaks are cut off with a hot blade when they’re just a few days old.

Other honorees include Southern Roots in San Antonio; Clementine Bakery in Brooklyn, New York; Sweet Hazel & Co. in Murray, Utah; and Ezra’s Enlightened Café in Indianapolis. Each eatery will receive a framed certificate from PETA, which offers a ThanksVegan guide as well as recipes for apple and pumpkin pies and much more on its website.

PETA’s Pitch to Liberate the Lingo of Baseball: Scratch ‘Bullpen’ for ‘Arm Barn’

As the World Series turns into a pitching duel, PETA is pitching a proposal to the baseball world: Strike out the word “bullpen”—which refers to the holding area where terrified bulls are kept before slaughter—in favor of a more modern, animal-friendly term. PETA’s suggestion? The arm barn!

arm barn to replace bullpen in MLB

Words matter, and baseball’s “bullpens” devalue talented players and mock the misery of sensitive animals. PETA is encouraging Major League Baseball (MLB) coaches, announcers, players, and fans to changeup their language and embrace “the arm barn” instead.

Strike Speciesism From Your Life: Why Words Matter

In the meat industry, cows are hung upside down and their throats are slit, while in rodeos, gentle bulls are goaded into kicking and bucking by being electroshocked. While they await their violent fate, these sensitive, frightened animals are typically held in a “bullpen.”

It has perhaps never been more evident that words carry immense power—even within the baseball diamond. People are striving to eradicate racist, sexist, homophobic, and ableist phrases (or team names) from our common language. But unfortunately, many of us also grew up hearing phrases that condone violence toward animals and perpetuate speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. Sayings such as “kill two birds with one stone,” “beat a dead horse,” “bring home the bacon,” and “bullpen” all normalize violent acts against some of the most defenseless members of our society.

Here’s What You Can Do to Help Spread the Word About the ‘Arm Barn’

Share this post with your friends, family members, and social media followers—let them know why you think the MLB should take up PETA’s pitch and embrace the term “arm barn.”

PETA Statement: Animal Welfare Violations at Legacy Health

Please see the statement from Dr. Alka Chandna, PhD, PETA Vice President of Laboratory Investigations Cases, regarding a just-obtained federal document indicating critical animal welfare violations at Legacy Health in Portland, Oregon:

It strains credulity to believe that an institution that cannot administer anesthesia without killing an animal patient can be trusted to deliver optimum healthcare. Just-released government documents obtained by PETA reveal that Legacy Health was cited for a critical violation of federal animal welfare laws for failing to ensure adequate veterinary care for a monkey who had been used in an experimental procedure. A valve on the anesthesia machine had been left closed, and the monkey experienced difficulty breathing and eventually endured what must have been a painful and distressing death from pressure-related trauma to the lungs.

The hundreds of animals—including monkeys, sheep, pigs, and genetically modified mice—experimented on and killed every year in Legacy Health’s laboratories feel pain and value their lives just as much as any of the company’s executives—so Legacy Health would do well to modernize its experimentation program by leaving archaic and cruel animal tests behind and using only sophisticated, human-relevant research methods.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to experiment on”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information on PETA’s newsgathering and reporting, please visit PETA.org or follow the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.
