PETA to Cause Ruckus at UMass Homecoming Parade Over Monkey Menopause Experiments

Representatives from the University of Massachusetts–Amherst (UMass)—a public university—want to deny PETA the ability to protest peacefully and notified the group that it couldn’t gather on campus during this weekend’s homecoming events to expose menopause experiments on marmosets. But it won’t work. PETA supporters will descend on the Homecoming Parade on Friday to inform students and alumni that university experimenter Agnès Lacreuse has received $4 million in taxpayer funds to cut into the monkeys’ skulls, probe their brains, wake them up every 15 minutes all night long, and torment them in various other ways—even though marmosets don’t even experience menopause.

When:    Friday, November 5, 4–5 p.m.

Where:    On the northeast corner of College and S. Pleasant streets, Amherst

“Drugging marmosets and depriving them of sleep is scientifically pointless and unspeakably cruel,” says PETA neuroscientist Dr. Katherine Roe. “Instead of trying to hide its shoddy science from the public, UMass should shut down this laboratory now.”

Head of PETA ‘Owl’ to Be Drilled on JHU Campus

Johns Hopkins University (JHU) experimenter Shreesh Mysore conducted invasive brain experiments on owls without valid permits for four years, and is still conducting these needlessly invasive experiments, so tomorrow, PETA is sending letters to government bodies demanding accountability. At the same time, PETA supporters will protest on the JHU campus—including a “mad scientist” who will “drill” into the skull of an “owl.”

When:    Wednesday, November 3, 12 noon

Where:    JHU, Keyser Quad, 3400 N. Charles St., Baltimore

In the letters to state and federal officials, PETA is asking that Mysore be penalized for failing to obtain permits from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (MD DNR) to conduct his painful experiments on owls. In these taxpayer-funded experiments, Mysore implants electrodes in their brains, forces the birds into cramped jackets or plastic tubes, clamps their eyes open, and bombards them with sounds and lights for up to 12 hours. Even though he conducted these experiments in violation of Maryland state law for four years, neither the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which funds these experiments, nor the MD DNR has held him accountable. PETA asks the MD DNR to bar Mysore from obtaining future permits and asks the NIH Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare to stop enabling animal experimenters in breaking the law without consequences.

“Not only are Mysore’s deadly experiments on owls cruel, for years they took place illegally,” says PETA Vice President Shalin Gala. “PETA is urging the government to throw the book at this rogue experimenter, who terrorizes birds and acts as if he’s above the law.”

Everywhere Biden Goes, So Go PETA’s Dinosaurs

Below, please find a statement from PETA Senior Vice President Kathy Guillermo regarding PETA’s international campaign encouraging President Joe Biden not to hire another “dinosaur” to lead the National Institutes of Health now that Francis Collins is leaving the agency at year’s end. PETA’s dinosaurs have followed Biden to Washington, D.C.; Rome; and now Glasgow, following stops in Baltimore; Kearny, New Jersey; Hartford, Connecticut; and Scranton, Pennsylvania.

Dinosaurs are roaming the Earth again, and their latest stop is the global climate summit in Scotland. They want to make sure that President Joe Biden hires a visionary director to lead NIH, one who embraces state-of-the-art, high-tech research, rather than another “dinosaur” who prefers to fund outdated animal experiments. Beagle torture and making monkeys lose their minds are just two examples of NIH’s ethical, fiscal, and scientific failures. The agency squanders more than $19 billion annually on animal studies—despite clear evidence that harming animals is not providing cures for what ails humans. PETA urges the president to put the U.S. back in the forefront of good science by immediately embracing our Research Modernization Deal for both humans and animals. Just as with the climate crisis, this can’t wait.
