‘ThanksVegan’? PETA, Vigilante Vegan to Pass Out Free Meatless Roasts

It’s a vegan turkey free-for-all! On Tuesday, PETA supporters will join Stewart Mitchell (aka “Vigilante Vegan”) to distribute hundreds of free Tofurky roasts to passersby at Brooklyn Junction along with an appeal for them to give turkeys a break this holiday by celebrating “ThanksVegan.” Recipients will also be invited to join PETA’s new food-justice campaign, which calls on the government to redirect meat, egg, and dairy industry subsidies toward incentives for grocers in food deserts to stock fresh fruits, vegetables, and other healthy, humane vegan foods.

When:    Tuesday, November 16, 12 noon

Where:    Brooklyn Junction (at the intersection of Flatbush and Nostrand avenues), Brooklyn

“When people realize that turkeys love their families, feel pain and fear, and value their lives, they’re eager to put a vegan turkey on the table,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is calling on local, state, and government agencies to stop pushing the meat industry’s agenda and to provide underserved communities with healthy vegan food.”

Stocking stores in food deserts with healthy vegan food would help vulnerable communities reduce their rates of cancer, heart disease, and diabetes and help the environment, given that animal agriculture is responsible for nearly one-fifth of human-induced greenhouse-gas emissions. And furnishing holiday tables with delicious vegan roasts would help prevent turkeys from being dragged through an electrified bath in slaughterhouses before their throats are slit and they’re dumped into scalding-hot defeathering tanks.

The U.S. government spends about $38 billion in tax money each year to subsidize the meat, egg, and dairy industries—the vast majority of which goes to big corporations, not American farmers—while only about $17 million is used to subsidize the fruit and vegetable industries. PETA launched the food-justice campaign in Atlanta with Pinky Cole of Slutty Vegan, and additional events are planned for Baltimore and Los Angeles.

Bill Would Ban ‘Ejiao,’ a ‘Virility’ Remedy Made From the Skin of Bludgeoned Donkeys

Few people realize that the U.S. is the world’s third-largest importer of ejiao—donkey-skin gelatin found in many snacks, face creams, Chinese folk remedies, and energy drinks—but a new bill introduced by Rep. Don Beyer (D-Va.) would prohibit sales of the product or transport in either interstate or foreign commerce. The Ejiao Act (HR 5203) has already won the support of PETA (PETA entities have more than 9 million members and supporters worldwide), which exposed cruelty in the ejiao industry with a PETA Asia undercover video showing workers using sledgehammers to bash in the heads of donkeys as young as 5 months old.

“Donkeys in Africa, Asia, and South America, some just babies, are being stolen or sold and then bludgeoned to death and their skin boiled for candy, snacks, and beauty products,” says PETA Senior Vice President Kathy Guillermo. “PETA urges everyone who knows how gentle and trusting donkeys are to ask their representatives to cosponsor HR 5203.”

A 2019 PETA video exposé revealed abuse inside Kenya’s donkey slaughter industry, which exists to meet the demand for ejiao in China. Workers are seen violently beating frightened and gentle animals who are crammed together so tightly that they could barely move. Donkeys are packed onto trucks and endure grueling journeys to slaughterhouses from as far away as neighboring countries, during which they aren’t given any water or food.

‘Clifford the Big Red Dog’ in the Doghouse With PETA

Below, please find a statement from PETA Senior Vice President Lisa Lange in response to the release of Clifford the Big Red Dog, which features a live capuchin monkey, among other real animals, and credits an animal trainer and a wrangler who appear to be affiliated with Birds & Animals Unlimited (BAU), a notorious Hollywood supplier at whose facility filth, neglect, and deprivation are the name of the game:

“While other movies opt for CGI that allows monkeys to stay with their families, instead of being dragged onto film sets and forced to perform, Clifford the Big Red Dog doubles down on old-school cruelty. Clifford is a big red flag, and kind audiences should skip the flick in favor of productions that don’t exploit animals.”

PETA’s 10-month-long investigation into BAU revealed that animals were denied adequate veterinary care for illnesses and injuries, forced to live inside filthy enclosures, and denied food so that they would be hungry while being trained to do tricks. Following PETA’s exposé, the U.S. Department of Agriculture cited BAU for violations of the federal Animal Welfare Act.

COP26? More Like COPOUT26: PETA Entities March for a Vegan World

From Glasgow to London, PETA entities joined COP26 marches to help spread a very important message to all citizens: You can’t be a meat-eating environmentalist. Everyone must go vegan for animals and the planet.

PETA entity supporters from around the world stood strong in Glasgow, where COP26 was taking place, alongside activists and other animal rights organizations, such as Viva! and One Kind, to draw attention to the environmental importance of going vegan. PETA U.K. joined the COP26 London march to make sure our message was heard loud and clear.

What’s COP26, You Say?

COP26—or COPOUT26—is the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference, which brings parties together supposedly to accelerate action towards restoring the planet and tackling the climate crisis. World leaders are expected to agree on ways to stick to the global “carbon budget” and prevent a rise in global temperature of 2.7 degrees above pre-industrial levels.

Despite persistent campaigning from PETA entities and other organizations, governments around the world are still failing to take action to mitigate the catastrophic impact animal agriculture is having on our planet.

How PETA Entities Are Taking Action for Climate Justice

In addition to creating a lot of noise at the COP26 marches in Glasgow and London, we also made sure that anyone—including world leaders, celebrities, and officials—walking around Glasgow during this important time of climate emergency understood exactly how to help the situation.

Two PETA U.S. “dinos” joined some of the marches as well, following President Joe Biden from the U.S. to Glasgow, Scotland, to encourage him to appoint a National Institutes of Health (NIH) leader who is ready to bring animal-free and human-relevant research to the institute. The agency currently wastes $19 billion annually on animal experiments that don’t offer cures or treatments for human ailments—that’s $19 billion that could be better spent on climate-crisis initiatives. Biden can help end the suffering of animals used for experimentation by choosing a forward-thinking NIH leader, and the dinos are making sure he gets the message loud and clear!PETA dinosaurs follow Joe Biden to the COP26 conference in ScotlandPETA activists from the U.S. and Mexico made a statement with more than 100,000 responses racked up on our COP26 action alert by the time the summit started. Animal rights supporters from many organizations united to get the vegan message trending on social media—you couldn’t log on to Twitter without #VegansForClimateJustice, #MeatEqualsHeat, and #CopOut26 popping up on your feed.

Fight Climate Change With Diet Change

The fishing, meat, egg, and dairy industries aren’t just relentlessly cruel to animals–they’re also a nightmare for the environment. The United Nations states that urgent and unprecedented changes—including a shift to being vegan—are needed to limit the catastrophic damage that will be caused by the climate crisis.

Scientists agree that vegan foods have a smaller carbon footprint than their animal-derived equivalents, so the single biggest thing we can do as individuals to help combat the climate crisis is to go vegan.
