Edison 10-Year-Old Wins National PETA Kids Award

Ten-year-old Nirvaan Agarwal has attended county commissioner meetings to advocate for animals held in a roadside zoo, volunteered to help animals in sanctuaries, and hit the streets to protest against the meat industry. Now his determination and ingenuity have won him top honors in PETA Kids’ 2022 All-Star for Animals Contest.

A vegan since birth, Nirvaan seizes every opportunity to help animals, from sharing his message through a bullhorn during marches to decrying the cruel treatment of animals in the fur and leather industries, chalking animal rights messages onto sidewalks, and distributing PETA Kids comic books to his peers. After flooding from Hurricane Ida affected the Johnson Park Zoo, he attended Middlesex County Board of Commissioners meetings and presented his own research about why the animals there should be moved to reputable sanctuaries—and his efforts paid off for the red fox, raccoon, pythons, and other animals the county plans to place in new facilities. A guardian to three adopted cats, Nirvaan also enjoys building cat castles and plans to become a vegan chef.

“Whether he’s marching in vegan rallies or urging county leaders to help animals languishing in a roadside zoo, Nirvaan is setting a heroic example for young people everywhere,” says PETA Senior Director of Youth Programs Marta Holmberg. “Animals have an ally in Nirvaan, and PETA Kids is delighted to honor him for leading us all toward a kinder future.”

In addition to a year’s supply of vegan cookies from San Diego–based Maya’s Cookies, Nirvaan will receive a personalized bullhorn, an assortment of merchandise from PETA Kids, and yearlong bragging rights. See the full contest details here.

PETA Ups Reward to $5,000 in Abandoned Ailing Hound Case

PETA is adding $4,000 to Virginia Beach Animal Control’s $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for abandoning a desperately ailing dog in Lineberry Park on Kings Point Road on Thursday, July 28.

In the early morning hours, animal control officers responded to a call from a passerby about the dog, who appeared to be a beagle-hound mix between 3 and 8 years old, and determined that his condition was so dire that he needed to be euthanized. The dog was suffering from two enormous tumors on his back, one of which had ruptured.

Virginia Beach Animal Control officers are investigating the case, and PETA is asking for the public’s help to solve it. Would you please share this information with your audience? It may lead to a break in the case.

“This suffering dog needed urgent care and compassion, but instead, someone dumped him in a park and left him to suffer—scared, hurting, and all alone,” says PETA Senior Vice President Daphna Nachminovitch. “PETA thanks the passerby who alerted authorities and urges anyone with information to come forward so that whoever neglected and abandoned this dog can be held accountable.”

Anyone with information about this case should contact Virginia Beach Crime Solvers at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP (1-888-562-5887) or visit P3tips.com.

Are You Patrick’s Star? PETA-Rescued Labradoodle Looking for New Home

Who loves tennis balls, has flowing cocoa-brown fur, and is looking for a family to call his own? This guy! Patrick, a 2-year-old Labradoodle rescued by PETA, is looking for a new, loving, responsible guardian. Are you Patrick’s star?

Patrick sits with his tongue flopped to one side

Handsome Patrick Has Lots of Love to Give

Patrick’s former guardian contacted PETA because she was moving and was no longer able to care for him. She called local facilities, but the limited-acceptance shelters told her they were full and would only put him on a waiting list. Thankfully, she contacted us for help and our open-admission shelter’s adoption team was able to give him the temporary space he needed.

Patrick is a 2-year-old, 80-pound Labradoodle. He is fully housetrained and likes the company of other dogs, cats, khaki-sporting sea sponges, and even kids—but the only companion he really needs to thrive is a tennis ball. (Is a tennis ball an instrument?) Unlike his starfish counterpart, this Patrick is no lazybones. He loves not only playing ball, but also having a ball: A family that will meet his exercise needs is a must! Life under a rock is also a no-go for this dashing doodle. His gorgeous, flowing fur will require regular grooming appointments and at-home brushing sessions—even if he can’t see his forehead. Is this happy boy the perfect addition to your family?
