VIDEO: Local PETA Supporters Confront UMass Officials at Alumni Event

Earlier this evening, PETA supporters were kicked out by security at the Westin St. Francis hotel after invading the University of Massachusetts–Amherst (UMass) alumni event and confronting President Marty Meehan and Chancellor Kumble R. Subbaswamy over the school’s horrific menopause experiments on marmoset monkeys. Video footage is available here.

Joined by protesters with firsthand knowledge of menopause—a condition that marmosets don’t experience—an activist took the mic from President Meehan and informed alumni that UMass experimenters drill into marmosets’ skulls, cut open their necks to expose muscle, and thread electrode leads from the scalp and neck to the abdomen. To mimic hot flashes in them, experimenters cut out their ovaries and heat the animals’ bodies with hand warmers, like those placed in mittens. In these and other tests, sensitive and social monkeys are kept in solitary confinement—like Anakin, a marmoset who was eventually killed by UMass experimenters. The tests have cost taxpayers over $4 million.

“Alumni were horrified that UMass torments tiny monkeys behind closed doors,” says PETA Senior Vice President Kathy Guillermo. “PETA is calling on the school to shut down these costly experiments that have never helped women and never will.”

PETA has been contacted by numerous UMass alumni and donors concerned about the school’s animal welfare violations. The U.S. Department of Agriculture cited the university for severely burning a marmoset with hand warmers as he was recovering from surgery, failing to alert an attending veterinarian to sick animals, and permitting a monkey to escape and then injuring the animal’s tail during recapture.

Texas Tech Piglet Dies After Being Denied Water; PETA Files NIH Complaint

Please see the following statement from PETA Vice President Dr. Alka Chandna regarding a posted inspection report and citation issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture against Texas Tech University for a critical violation of federal animal welfare regulations. According to the report, the hose supplying water to a pen confining four piglets became disconnected for an “unknown period of time.” Laboratory staff only noticed the issue after the piglets “appeared thin” and three were observed to be “less active.” Although water was then given to the animals, one piglet had been denied water for so long that the animal “began to display neurologic signs of salt toxicity and seizures” and was euthanized.

Texas Tech University’s negligence and incompetence constitute animal abuse, and PETA has filed a complaint with the National Institutes of Health (NIH), calling on the agency to turn off the money spigot to the school. If Texas Tech laboratory staff can’t remember to give piglets something as basic as water, the university has no business experimenting on these smart, social, and sensitive animals. The agony of dying of thirst is the same whether the victim is a pig or a human.

Texas Tech received more than $5 million in taxpayer money from NIH last year, but such largesse brings with it a legal expectation that the university will comply with minimum animal welfare laws. Texas Tech should modernize its research program by leaving cruel and archaic experiments on animals behind and using only sophisticated, human-relevant research methods instead.

Fashion Crime at Loro Piana: PETA Calls For Investigation Into Illegal Fur Sales

Today, after a PETA supporter documented fox fur–trimmed jackets being sold at the Loro Piana store on Rodeo Drive, the group sent a letter to California Department of Fish and Wildlife Law Enforcement Chief David Bess urging him to investigate this apparent violation of the statewide fur ban that went into effect on January 1. The law—which was championed by more than 600,000 PETA supporters in California—outlaws the sale, offering or display for sale, and production of all new fur products.

“Loro Piana isn’t just committing a fashion crime by selling fur: It may also be breaking state law,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “PETA is urging state officials to investigate and calling on this cruel retailer to stop stocking fur items, which sicken kindhearted consumers.”

Animals used in the fur industry spend their entire lives inside cramped cages, where they frantically pace back and forth, gnaw on the bars, and mutilate themselves. Others are caught in steel traps—which slam shut on their legs, often cutting down to the bone, causing excruciating pain and blood loss.

PETA also alerted Bess to Loro Piana’s locations in San Francisco and Costa Mesa, California, for further investigation into their fur sales. Hundreds of other companies and brands—including Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, Gucci, Michael Kors, Oscar de la Renta, and Versace—have stopped selling fur, but LVMH, Loro Piana’s parent company, has refused to cut ties with the fur and reptile skins industries, even after a PETA Asia exposé revealed that workers at an LVMH supplier beat snakes with hammers, sliced them open with razorblades, and likely skinned them alive.

Birthday Surprise for Shriners’ Head Outside His Home … PETA!

On Sunday, Shriner Imperial Potentate Kenneth Craven—who’s serving a term as the president and CEO of Shriners International—turns a year older, so to mark the occasion, PETA supporters will greet him outside his house with signs that read, “Animals in Circuses Never Have Happy Birthdays.” The hip-hip-hassle is an escalation of efforts to get Shriners to cut the cruelty from all chapters’ circuses, following Moolah Shrine’s recent announcement that it will drop elephant acts.

When:    Sunday, January 22, 12 noon

“Craven’s a year older, and if he’s any wiser, he’ll make every Shrine circus go animal-free,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA wants Shriners International’s head to turn this into a festive day for all by banning the use of elephants, tigers, and other animals in performances.”

Shrine circuses are among the very last remaining shows that still use wild animals, who are confined to small crates, kept in shackles, and deprived of any semblance of a natural or happy life. They routinely partner with notoriously cruel exhibitors, including Carson & Barnes Circus, which has been cited for more than 100 violations of the federal Animal Welfare Act and whose head trainer was caught on video violently attacking elephants with bullhooks—weapons resembling a fireplace poker with a sharp hook on one end.
