‘Too Hot for Spot and Tot’! PETA Blasts Warnings in Louisville Stores

With temperatures rising and summer around the corner, PETA is launching a messaging blitz in convenience stores across Derby City, alerting people to the danger hot cars pose to vulnerable animals and children. The warnings seek to prevent tragedies like an incident last year in which a local man left two dogs locked in his car in 93-degree weather, prompting police to break one of the vehicle’s windows in an attempt to rescue the animals, both of whom succumbed to heatstroke.

PETA points out that even when it’s 75 degrees outside, the temperature inside a parked car can soar to 94 degrees in just 10 minutes, and when it’s 90 degrees outside, the temperature inside a parked car can reach 109 degrees in just minutes. As the temperature climbs, dogs endure agonizing physical reactions to the heat: They go into shock, vomit blood, urinate, have diarrhea, and can experience multi-organ failure, cardiopulmonary arrest, fluid buildup in the lungs, muscle tremors, seizures, unconsciousness, and, finally, death.

“Hot cars and dogs don’t mix,” says PETA Senior Vice President Daphna Nachminovitch. “PETA is urging everyone to be ‘vehicle vigilantes’ this summer and do whatever it takes to keep vulnerable animals and children out of these death traps.”

In 2022 alone, at least 54 dogs died from heat-related causes and another 469 animals were rescued from potentially deadly situations—but since these numbers include only incidents reported in the media, the actual figures are surely far higher.

Anyone who sees a dog or a child in a parked car should never leave the scene and should take immediate action: Call 911. Then write down the vehicle’s make, model, color, and license plate number and rush to have nearby stores page the owner. If the owner can’t be found and if authorities are unresponsive, do whatever it takes to save the individual’s life. PETA offers an emergency window-breaking hammer to help intervene in life-or-death situations. The group offers additional information on how to respond, including a handy five-step guide, here.

PETA’s ad will appear at the cash registers of 10 local convenience stores, including Kings Discount Liquors Store, Supermercado Puebla, and Taqueria El Taco Loco. The group is also running the ad in stores in several other cities, including Las Vegas and Orlando, Florida, that have had fatal or near-fatal incidents involving hot cars.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. Charles River Laboratories Faces Existential Crisis With Hubris and Arrogance

Please see the following statement from PETA Senior Science Advisor Dr. Lisa Jones-Engel regarding Charles River Laboratory’s 2023 first-quarter earnings report:

Charles River Laboratories wants investors to believe that its attempts to develop a test confirming that it only imports purpose-bred monkeys will successfully bring this monkey-selling company back to business as usual. They won’t.

First, biologic drugs can be approved without using monkeys, which have never been required, as the FDA Modernization Act now makes clear. Second, the fundamental biology of monkeys won’t change. Long-tailed macaques will continue to reproduce at a rate that simply won’t satisfy the voracious experimentation industry, which will continue to abduct them from their forest homes and decimate wild populations.

Executives also failed to disclose that an outbreak of tuberculosis was reported among monkeys at an export facility in Mauritius—a country from which Charles River imports monkeys and the second-largest exporter of monkeys to the U.S.

Charles River needs to check its hubris before long-tailed macaques are pushed to extinction. Nature has bigger parameters at play here, bringing an impending existential crisis for the company.

PETA Demands Feds Act Following Botched Brain Surgeries on Animals at Johns Hopkins University

PETA is urging the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to investigate numerous incidents at Johns Hopkins University (JHU) for possible violations of federal animal welfare regulations after discovering that experimenters there allowed a rabbit to suffer with a massive tumor, while other animals endured unmitigated pain after botched brain surgeries.

PETA details the incidents at JHU laboratories in a letter sent today to a top USDA official, including the following:

  • A rabbit endured a liver tumor so large it spread to their lungs.
  • A rabbit’s skull incision burst open, another rabbit’s incision became infected, and a third rabbit developed neurological problems—all from unsanitary conditions in the lab and staff inattention.
  • A staffer never bothered to renew an application for further testing but continued heart surgery tests on a pig even after the experiment had expired.

“The laboratories at Johns Hopkins University have proved, yet again, incapable of or unwilling to uphold even the bargain basement protections for animals afforded by federal guidelines,” says PETA Vice President of International Laboratory Methods Shalin Gala. “PETA is calling for the USDA to investigate this disturbing culture of corruption and cruelty and to take meaningful corrective actions.”

JHU’s animal laboratories have a lengthy rap sheet of violations of animal welfare guidelines, including Shreesh Mysore’s notorious brain-scrambling studies on owls that even violated the state law of Maryland for at least seven years.

JHU’s laboratories were previously cited by the USDA for failing to give animals pain relief, using expired drugs, not reporting animals’ broken bones, and failing to maintain sterile areas—all in violation of basic federal animal protection requirements.

Despite this, JHU has received more than $1.1 billion in federal taxpayer funds from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) since 2022, and nearly half that money went to animal experiments. Studies have shown that 95% of new drugs that test safe and effective in animals fail because they don’t work or are dangerous in humans.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to experiment on” and which opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview—is calling on NIH to adopt the Research Modernization Deal developed by PETA scientists, which provides a strategic roadmap for replacing animal tests with modern, technologically advanced research methods.
