It’s a Bird! It’s a Plane! It’s Time to Go Vegan! PETA Takes to the Myrtle Beach Skies With Climate Crisis Message
Ahead of Memorial Day, PETA is sending beachgoers a sky-high message on Saturday pointing to animal agriculture as a leading cause of the climate catastrophe through a flying banner that reads, “Getting Hot? So Is the Planet. Go Vegan.” According to the United Nations, about a third of all human-caused greenhouse gas emissions are linked to food production, and the largest percentage of these emissions come from the meat and dairy industries.
“Vegan eating spares animals tremendous suffering and helps slash the massive carbon footprint caused by animal agriculture,” says PETA Senior Vice President Colleen O’Brien. “PETA is asking everyone to take personal responsibility for the planetary crisis by going vegan on Memorial Day and every day, and we have free vegan starter kits for all.”
PETA notes that growing water-intensive crops just to feed animals raised for food consumes more than half the water used in the U.S. and that up to 80% of deforestation in the Amazon is linked to meat production, either for grazing or for growing food for cattle. Vegan foods—such as fruits and vegetables, whole grains, beans, peas, nuts, and lentils—require less energy, land, and water to produce, and going vegan would help drastically reduce human negative impact on the environment.
Every person who goes vegan spares nearly 200 animals each year daily suffering and terrifying deaths and reduces their risk of developing heart disease and cancer. PETA’s free vegan starter kit can help those looking to make the switch.
PETA’s banner will fly over Rehoboth Beach and all local beaches for two hours, beginning at 12 noon.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org, listen to The PETA Podcast, or follow the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.

PETA-Backed Network Is Saving Thousands of Animals in Ukraine
Since just days after the war in Ukraine began, PETA Germany has teamed up with many organizations to help as many animals there as possible. This strong network, supported by PETA’s Global Compassion Fund, feeds thousands of dogs each week and has rescued more than 11,000 animals so far.
Watch the Global Compassion Fund–backed team Animal Rescue Kharkiv (ARK) on a “day in the life” as they help dog Piglet and countless others:
The Food Network
A group of dedicated advocates is risking their lives to provide a steady supply of food for dogs, cats, horses, and donkeys.
Countless cats and dogs roamed Ukraine streets, struggling to survive, even before the war. When the bombs began falling, they were joined by thousands more who were abandoned when their guardians fled or were killed. Each month, PETA Germany works with a European supplier to optimize ingredients and the size and weight of each bag of food so that no space is wasted and distributions can be made as quickly and efficiently as possible.
PETA Germany has orchestrated the creation and delivery of more than 3 million pounds of food (1.4 million kilograms) for animals in Ukraine—check out some of the grateful recipients as ARK distributes the supply around Kharkiv:
This supply has saved countless lives, particularly during the difficult winter months. To show just how vital it is, partners UAnimals and Humanna Kraina recently gave PETA Germany the All-Ukrainian Animal Protection Award. UAnimals was alongside PETA Germany from the beginning, helping to distribute the first 20-ton delivery of food. From that point on, UAnimals, ARK, Humanna Kraina, and several other organizations have regularly received large shipments of food that they promptly deliver to animals in need.
How You Can Help Animals
PETA Germany and its partners’ determination and grit have helped thousands of animals in Ukraine survive famine, injuries, and other traumatic experiences. PETA Germany’s volunteers put their own safety on the line every day as they deliver food and veterinary care and transport animals out of the war zone. Global Compassion Fund donors make this work possible, and you can join the many who are helping animals in Romania, Turkey, Ukraine, and elsewhere by donating today!

Victory! Luxury Travel Guide Drops Camel Rides Following PETA Exposé
After hearing from PETA, locally based luxury tour operator Scott Dunn, which also has offices in London and Singapore, has agreed to stop promoting and selling tickets for exploitative camel rides at the pyramids of Giza and has confirmed to PETA U.K. that it doesn’t promote marine parks or elephant rides. In thanks, PETA U.K. is sending the company delicious vegan chocolates.
The move follows a recent video exposé from PETA Asia showing that camels used for rides at the pyramids of Giza and other top Egyptian tourist attractions are beaten bloody, yanked by the nose, forced to walk on their knees, and tied up. The animals’ legs are tied tightly together to prevent them from moving or escaping, and some camels are tied to the backs of vehicles and dragged through the dirt. When their bodies are too worn out to use for rides, they’re sold and slaughtered for meat.
“Thanks to its new policy, Scott Dunn’s clientele will enjoy the stunning views at Giza without supporting abusive and deadly animal rides,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is celebrating Scott Dunn for taking a stand for animals and urges other tourism companies to follow its lead.”
Scott Dunn joins several other tour operators nationwide in removing the rides from its site. PETA Asia is calling on the governor of Giza to investigate the traders who have been caught abusing the camels and for the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities to remove animal rides from the Giza site.
