Giant ‘Babies’ to Give Away 5,000 Vegan Chocolate Bars at Fan Expo

At the Back to the Future–themed Fan Expo this weekend, PETA and giant bouncy “babies” will pass out 5,000 dairy-free Vego chocolate bars. Why? To make the point that cow’s milk is for baby cows, not humans, and that attendees better start eating vegan if they want a future to go back to.

When:    Saturday, June 3, 12 noon

Where:    Outside the Pennsylvania Convention Center, 133 N. Broad St. (at the intersection with Cherry Street), Philadelphia

In the archaic dairy industry, calves are torn away from their beloved mothers so that the milk they produce for the calves can be sold for human use, and cow emissions are the primary source of the greenhouse gas methane, which is 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide in warming the atmosphere.

“No one needs a DeLorean time machine to see that drinking milk designed for calves wrecks the planet and robs us of a future,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “With all the dairy-free chocolates, cheeses, and milks available today, going vegan is easy, and PETA’s giveaway will give the expo a delicious taste before it’s too late.”

PETA will hand out a total of 10,000 Vego chocolate bars at various festivals in Philadelphia and Virginia Beach, Virginia this weekend.

PETA Wants Cruelty-to-Animals Charges for Accused Local Arsonist

This morning, PETA sent a letter to Eric Toney and Mark Bensen, the district attorneys for Fond du Lac and Washington counties, respectively, asking them to add cruelty-to-animals charges to those that Daniel Enright currently faces for allegedly igniting at least eight fires that have burned across an estimated 60 acres of land in the area since 2020.

The letter notes that a “vast number of species, including sandhill cranes, spotted salamanders, and star-nosed moles,” were residing in and around Kettle Moraine State Forest, where at least one of the fires occurred, and that causing animals to suffer and die painfully, as was likely the case in these fires, violates Wisconsin’s animal protection laws.

“An untold number of terrified animals likely burned and died in agony, and the natural homes of even more of them were destroyed,” says PETA Senior Vice President Daphna Nachminovitch. “The person responsible for so much suffering should face charges, and PETA is asking anyone who found an animal harmed or killed due to one of these wildfires to please come forward.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way” and which opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview—points to precedents: Prosecutors in California and Oregon added cruelty-to-animals charges in similar wildfire cases, resulting in convictions on those charges.

PETA’s letter to Toney and Bensen follows.

June 1, 2023

The Honorable Eric Toney

District Attorney

Fond du Lac County

The Honorable Mark Bensen

District Attorney

Washington County

Dear Messrs. Toney and Bensen:

I hope this letter finds you well. I’m writing to request that your offices add cruelty-to-animals charges, as appropriate, to the charges of arson and intentionally setting fire to another’s land that Daniel Enright already faces in connection with at least eight fires in Fond du Lac and Washington counties since 2020.

Although thankfully no humans lost their lives, the countless wild animals who resided on the approximately 60 acres of land estimated to have burned were undoubtedly less fortunate. The forests, marshes, and grasslands in and around the Kettle Moraine State Forest—where at least one of the fires occurred—are home to a vast number of species, including sandhill cranes, spotted salamanders, and star-nosed moles. Wildfires inflict terror and suffering on these (and other) animals—and cause them to endure prolonged, agonizing deaths.

Wis. Stat. § 951.02 states that “[n]o person may treat any animal … in a cruel manner.” Wis. Stat. § 951.01(2) defines “cruel” as “causing unnecessary and excessive pain or suffering or unjustifiable injury or death.” Given that Enright is accused of intentionally starting multiple wildfires that surely led to unnecessary and unjustifiable suffering, injury, and death for an untold number of animals—and that such conduct hardly qualifies as the lawful taking of wild animals otherwise exempt from prosecution—we respectfully ask that investigators and your offices add mistreatment-of-animals charges to the ones he already faces. Prosecutors in California and Oregon pursued these charges in similar cases that resulted in convictions last year.

Thank you for your consideration and for the difficult work you do.

Sincerely,

Sarah Deffinger

Senior Evidence Analyst

Video of Fatal Horse Injury to Circle Churchill Downs, Courtesy of PETA

In the wake of 12 horses’ deaths over the past month at Churchill Downs, on Thursday PETA’s mobile billboard will traverse the streets outside the track, running exclusive footage of Lost in Limbo’s fatal fall during his May 26 race.

When:    Thursday, June 1, 12 noon–8 p.m.

Where:    Outside Churchill Downs, 700 Central Ave., Louisville

The disturbing video shows the horse crashing face-first into the dirt at full speed, then struggling to right himself. He sustained a catastrophic injury, in which his ankle shattered, that resulted in his euthanasia. The footage ends with PETA’s call for the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA) to suspend racing and timed workouts at the track while investigations into the string of deaths are underway.

“We are putting a face on these horrible deaths because every one of the 12 horses was an individual,” says PETA Senior Vice President Kathy Guillermo. “PETA urges HISA to put horses’ welfare first by immediately halting racing and timed workouts at Churchill Downs until the cause or causes of these deaths can be determined.”

Lost in Limbo broke away from handlers before the race, threw the jockey, and ran loose nearly the full length of the track’s backstretch before he was captured. PETA believes he should have been scratched at that point and given a thorough veterinary exam, but instead, he was put through the starting gate.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to use for entertainment or abuse in any other way”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. Is There a ‘Dark Side’ to PETA? Board Our Starship to Shine Light on a Rebel Force

Determined to discover a “dark side” of PETA? Hold on tight to your lightsaber! The shadowy voyage to the truth may surprise you—and even involves space flight and time travel.

Not So Long Ago in Our Galaxy, a ‘Dark Side’ Took Flight

Buuuuuut it’s not quite the dark side you’d expect. First, let’s leap back in time through PETA’s many milestones to 1981: Poof! As we board PETA’s starship to explore those earliest days, one thing is certain: It’s not launching from a “Death Star”—it’s soaring toward one in the hope that animals’ lives could be spared.

Still, a clever “cloak of darkness” helps the budding organization go undercover to investigate the use and abuse of monkeys for vivisection at a laboratory in Silver Spring, Maryland. We observe as this leads to the first-ever criminal conviction of a U.S. experimenter on cruelty-to-animals charges. Rather than hiding anything in shadow, PETA aims to illuminate.

Suddenly, it’s clear: PETA’s “dark side” is, in fact, a kind of “Rebel Alliance” bent on ending the “Galactic Empire” of speciesism and its use of animals for experimentation, food, clothing, entertainment, or any other human purpose. Shining an animal rights lightsaber on the dark corners of exploitative industries—starting at Silver Spring, Maryland, over 40 years ago—is PETA’s intent, and “the Force” of compassion compels the organization’s witty campaigns forward.

From here, we blast through multiple “meteor showers” of PETA’s efforts to spare animals used in vivisection often funded by unaware taxpayers through the National Institutes of Health (NIH). We view whistleblowers and PETA’s undercover investigators witnessing—often for weeks or months on end—egregious abuse of animals in laboratories, leading to litigation to stop it. Far from displaying a typical dark side, PETA’s practically glowing like the twin suns of Tatooine by giving animals a chance at better lives.

Zooming through the years, we slow our pace to pass into PETA’s work to end tests on dogs, guinea pigs, monkeys, and other animals for space travel.

Reflecting on the tragic death of the dog Laika on Sputnik 2, we learn how PETA got NASA’s plan to irradiate monkeys scrapped. Humans in the present day can help animals forced into experiments by supporting our Research Modernization Deal.

Next, we observe Star Wars sequel trilogy actor Daisy Ridley take a strong stand for the marmosets being exploited and killed in cruel experiments at the University of Massachusetts–Amherst (UMass).

Gliding up to PETA’s current campaign to end cruel, wasteful monkey fright tests, we watch NIH experimenter Elisabeth Murray suck out or burn parts of monkeys’ brains, confine the animals to a metal box, and then terrorize them with realistic-looking rubber snakes and spiders. Is it just us, or does she sound like a close cousin of Jabba the Hutt, who favors torturing captive individuals over showing kindness?

Since PETA supporters have done all they can over the years to be guardians of animals in these ways, it’s very encouraging that there’s a similar anti-vivisection theme in the recent film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

‘Spar Wars’: Dispelling Doubts Over PETA’s ‘Dark Side’

PETA is working tirelessly against the speciesist “dark side,” despite any Spar Wars that persist. But in case some doubts linger after that main leg of our voyage, let’s fly a bit longer to dissipate them with a few more strong examples of what PETA’s up against:

Now that any “shroud of the [real] dark side has fallen,” we hope you’ll feel like a Jedi when you willingly hop aboard again soon for an enlightening mode of “abduction”—like our virtual-reality experience touring U.S. campuses. Next time, we may even glide by Disneyland’s Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge—which earned PETA’s Vegan Superstar Award in honor of the 40th anniversary of Return of the Jedi—for stellar treats.

This concludes your first galactic tour. PETA thanks you for joining and urges you to stay tuned and get active—starting below as you alight from the starship.

How to Summon Your Inner ‘Yoda’ to Help Animals

With the “Empire” of speciesism constantly striking back, PETA relies on you as a supporter to summon your inner Yoda and take action for animals. Now that you’ve flown through time and space to get a glimpse of what PETA’s actually up to, take a few moments to help our “Rebel Alliance” achieve more victories by telling UMass to stop cruel testing on marmosets:
