Video: PETA Pleads With Lewis Hamilton to Reject F1’s Ties to Deadly Dog Race
Earlier today, PETA supporters “joined” Lewis Hamilton’s panel during the 2023 Forbes Iconoclast Summit at Pier 60 and issued a heartfelt appeal to the vegan athlete and devoted dog dad to speak out against Formula 1’s ties to the Iditarod, a grueling 1,000-mile dog-sled race in Alaska in which more than 150 dogs have died, garnering a thumbs-up from Hamilton. Formula 1’s owner, Liberty Media, still supports this cruel race via its subsidiary GCI’s $250,000-per-year sponsorship—and protesters want Hamilton to use his platform to call for the sponsorship to be pulled. Video footage and photos of the “plead-in” are available here.
“Formula 1 athletes choose to compete, but no dog chooses to run four marathons a day for up to two weeks through snow, ice, and harsh winds, the ‘reward’ for many being death,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “Lewis Hamilton can be a powerful advocate for these dogs, who desperately need his voice, and PETA is urging him to demand an end to GCI’s harmful sponsorship.”
Up to half the dogs who start the Iditarod don’t finish it. During this year’s race—which had the smallest field of mushers in the event’s history—approximately 175 dogs were pulled off the trail due to exhaustion, illness, injury, or other causes, leaving the remaining ones to work even harder. The race ended in controversy after the winner was caught on video dragging exhausted dogs toward a checkpoint.
The leading cause of death for dogs in the Iditarod is aspiration pneumonia—caused by inhaling their own vomit—and the race’s official death toll doesn’t include countless others who were killed simply because they weren’t fast enough or who died during the off-season while chained next to dilapidated boxes or plastic barrels in the bitter cold, a practice exposed in a PETA undercover investigation.
Alaska Airlines, Chrysler, Coca-Cola, Jack Daniel’s, Wells Fargo, ExxonMobil, and many other companies have cut ties with the Iditarod after learning from PETA how dogs suffer and die because of the race.

Hiker Hero! Local Man Nabs PETA Award for Saving Missing Dog
For rushing to the rescue of Riley, a dog who had been missing for several weeks in the Rocky Mountains, Zach Hackett will receive a Compassionate Action Award from PETA.
Hackett was hiking the remote Peak 4 trails when he heard a soft yip and was stunned to discover that it came from a weak, exhausted black-and-white dog, alone in the wilderness. It was Riley, who had disappeared from the home of his guardian, Mike Krugman, five weeks earlier. Hackett immediately scooped him up, wrapped him in a windbreaker for protection, and began a two-hour descent, navigating snow that was several feet deep. Once back in civilization, Hackett cared for Riley overnight and took him to a local animal shelter in the morning, where he was reunited with Krugman, who had been frantically searching for him and who called his rescue “a miracle.”
“Zach Hackett found a dog in need of help and didn’t hesitate to carry him on a treacherous trek back to safety,” says PETA Senior Vice President Colleen O’Brien. “PETA is honoring him for going all-in as Riley’s guardian angel, and we encourage everyone to follow his lead and take action whenever an animal is in danger.”
Hackett will receive a framed certificate and vegan chocolates.

PETA Statement: Two Horses Die in Less Than 24 Hours at Belmont Park
Please see the following statement from PETA Senior Vice President Kathy Guillermo regarding today’s death of Mashnee Girl in the first race at Belmont Park, less than 24 hours after the death of Excursionniste in the last race on Belmont Stakes day—both had the same trainer, Mark Hennig:
“Two dead Thoroughbreds in two days with the same trainer on the same track means one thing: Belmont Park is failing to protect horses. Like Churchill Downs, Belmont must suspend racing immediately to avoid the same bloodbath. Anything less makes Belmont complicit in the fatalities.”

Horse Dies in Last Race at Belmont Park: PETA Statement
Please see the following statement from PETA Senior Vice President Kathy Guillermo regarding the death of Excursionniste in the 13th race at Belmont Park this evening:
Racing couldn’t manage to keep all horses alive for even one Triple Crown day this year. Belmont Park did not do enough to prevent Excursionniste’s death. PETA urged the New York Racing Association and the New York State Gaming Commission to require CT scans for all horses racing today in order to screen for preexisting injuries, which are present in 90% of these fatalities. They refused. The racing industry is digging its own grave—as well as this horse’s.
