Pig Shot Six Times at Local Slaughterhouse; PETA Seeks Criminal Probe

PETA sent a letter to Tift County Solicitor General Jason Hoffman calling on him to investigate and file appropriate criminal charges against the Towson Cold Storage slaughterhouse workers responsible for excessively electroshocking and prodding a pig for 10 minutes before shooting him in the head six times over the span of seven and a half minutes. He remained standing, crying out, and bleeding from the nose throughout the prolonged ordeal, which was revealed in a just-released U.S. Department of Agriculture report.

PETA’s letter notes a pattern of bungled killings at this slaughterhouse: In 2021, an inspector documented that a steer remained standing after being shot in the head and that a pig cried out and stood back up after being electrocuted.

“This pig endured electric shocks and multiple blasts to his head in a horrifying, drawn-out killing that was nothing short of torture,” says PETA Vice President of Evidence Analysis Daniel Paden. “PETA is calling for a criminal investigation on behalf of all the animals who have suffered egregiously at this slaughterhouse and urges everyone to help prevent such violence by going vegan.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat” and which opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview—points out that pigs, cows, chickens, turkeys, sheep, and other animals feel pain and fear and value their lives, just as humans do. The group is pursuing charges under state law because federal officials haven’t prosecuted any inspected slaughterhouses for acts of abuse since at least 2007.

The Honorable Jason Hoffman
Tift County Solicitor General

Dear Mr. Hoffman:

I hope this letter finds you well. I would like to request that your office (and the proper local law-enforcement agency, as you deem appropriate) investigate and file suitable criminal charges against Towson Cold Storage and the worker(s) responsible for excessively electroshocking and prodding a pig for 10 minutes and then shooting him six times in the head over the span of nearly 7.5 minutes while he remained standing, crying out, and bleeding from the nose on April 18 at its slaughterhouse located at 301 Ridge Ave. S. in Tifton. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) documented the incident in the attached report, which states the following:

Plant personnel attempted for approximately 10 minutes to move the first hog (large aggressive barrow) into the stunning area with both a paddle and a hot shot device. Pig was poked in both the abdomen and thoracic cavity. Pig was vocalizing while being prodded with both hot shot and paddles. Barrow was agitated and aggressively biting at the employees and at the prods and vocalizing. The barrow was brought into the stunning area and plant personnel attempted to stun the animal using a .22 caliber long rifle. … The barrow did not go down after the first attempted stun and continued to stay standing with blood seen dripping from both nostrils. …

The bullet was jammed inside the rifle and plant personnel needed to exit the stunning area/room to retrieve a tool to get it unjammed. This took 4 minutes. A second shot with the .22 long rifle was administered to the barrow. The animal was not stunned, continued to stand, and vocalized. 50 seconds elapsed and a third shot with the .22 long rifle was administered to the hog. The barrow did not go down, remained standing, and vocalized. 45 seconds elapsed and the fourth shot with a captive bolt was administered to the hog. The hog did not go down, remained standing, and vocalized. 50 seconds elapsed and a fifth shot with the .22 long rifle was administered to the hog. The hog did not go down, remained standing, and continued to vocalize. 1:00 … elapsed and a sixth shot was administered with the .22 long rifle to the hog, and this shot successfully rendered the animal unconscious.

This conduct appears to violate O.C.G.A. § 16-12-4(b)(1). Importantly, FSIS’ action carries no criminal or civil penalties and does not preempt criminal liability under state law for slaughterhouse workers who perpetrate acts of cruelty to animals. Given that the FSIS has not initiated a criminal prosecution of a licensed slaughterhouse for inhumane handling since at least 2007, charges under state law are this victim’s only chance at a measure of justice.

Please let us know what we might do to assist you. Thank you for your consideration and for the difficult work that you do.

Sincerely,

Colin Henstock
Investigations Project Manager

Speak Out Against Animal Giveaways in Erie County, N.Y.!

Experts agree that fish are highly complex individuals who have the same capacity to feel pain, fear, and stress as mammals do, and they deserve better than to be doled out as trinkets. But the Erie County Fair in Hamburg, N.Y., via North American Midway Entertainment, c/o Strates Shows Inc., which offers all the carnival rides, carnival games, and carnival food concessions at the fair, is reportedly giving live goldfish away as prizes through August 20. To make matters worse, children were reportedly seen taking the goldfish on carnival rides, and according to one source, a child was seen “squeezing, putting in his mouth, chewing up, and spitting out his fish in front of the game where he’d won the fish,” which, if true, would be an explicit violation of New York’s anti-cruelty statutes.

Furthermore, when kept in captivity, these animals require a sizeable amount of water, climate control and filtration, regular aquarium maintenance, and ample enrichment. Most recipients of these living, feeling “prizes” are unprepared for such a commitment, and the fish suffer as a result. PETA contacted the fair organizers and asked that they exclude giving away live fish at future fairs, but to no apparent avail. These animals need your help now!

Using the following contact information, please politely urge the Erie County Fair and North American Midway Entertainment to forgo live-animal giveaways at their events and implement a policy against them—then share this alert with your friends and family.

Feds Cite Local Puppy Mill Over Fatally Neglected Dogs; PETA Seeks Criminal Probe

Armed with a damning U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) report revealing that four puppies died without veterinary care at a puppy mill in Perry Township operated by Enos Shetler, PETA rushed a letter to Morrow County Prosecutor Thomas Smith asking him to investigate the facility—which recently confined about 80 dogs—and file applicable charges against those responsible for the neglect.

According to a recent report, on May 1 a USDA veterinarian discovered that the puppies had died and that, prior to their deaths, Shetler knew that the dogs were “failing to gain weight” but didn’t consult a veterinarian. After three of the dogs died, Shetler still didn’t contact a veterinarian, and a fourth died days later.

“Puppies in pet stores come from miserable mills like this one, where dogs were left to languish and die,” says PETA Vice President of Evidence Analysis Daniel Paden. “PETA urges Morrow County authorities to prosecute those responsible for this deadly neglect and calls on everyone to avoid buying from breeders or pet stores, which keep operations like this one in business, and to adopt from shelters instead.”

PETA is pursuing charges under state law because the USDA doesn’t render relief or aid to animals during its inspections and these violations carry no federal criminal or civil penalties.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org, listen to The PETA Podcast, or follow the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.

PETA’s letter to Smith follows.

August 14, 2023

The Honorable Thomas Smith
Morrow County Prosecutor

Dear Mr. Smith:

I hope this letter finds you well. I’m writing to request that your office (and the proper law-enforcement agency, as you deem appropriate) investigate and, as suitable, file criminal charges against those responsible for fatally neglecting dogs at a breeding facility operated by Enos Shetler at 5562 Township Rd. 1 in Perry Township. PETA hopes investigators will visit this facility with a veterinarian who has expertise in canine health and welfare so they can identify any animals in need of care and opine on the conditions of and for the approximately 80 animals there.

A U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) veterinarian documented neglect at the facility in the attached report. On May 1, the veterinarian discovered that four Yorkshire terrier puppies had “died in close proximity to one another” without receiving veterinary care. Shetler evidently stated that he “had observed [these] puppies … were failing to gain weight,” but he didn’t contact a veterinarian. On March 22, three of the puppies died. Again, Shetler didn’t contact a veterinarian. On March 25, a fourth puppy died. As the USDA veterinarian wrote, failing “to communicate problems of animal health to [a] veterinarian can lead to mis-diagnosis and delays in providing proper care to animals resulting in worsening of their condition and … additional deaths.”

This neglect appears to violate R.C. 959.131 and/or R.C. 959.13. The USDA renders no aid or relief whatsoever to animals on site, and this report carries no criminal or civil penalties and doesn’t preempt criminal liability under state law for neglecting animals. If you’d like to learn more about the agency’s findings, please see the contact information for its office in Riverdale, Maryland, here.

Thank you for your time and consideration and for the difficult work that you do every day.

Sincerely,

Daniel Paden
Vice President of Evidence Analysis
